We shared a cyber security reality check

Challenge
Cyber security is often treated as a tech problem, we wanted to explore what the real damage is when it hits operations, people, and reputation.

Solution
We hosted our own HACKED event, a closed-room event designed to challenge assumptions and deepen understanding around cyber security. Drawing on real-world experiences, the session explored the harsh truth: everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

With 85% of UK businesses reporting a cyber attack in the past year, the event highlighted that it’s not a question of if, but when. And when it happens, it’s not just data theft that causes damage - it’s the paralysis of operations, the loss of access, and the public fear that follows.

We examined the anatomy of a cyber attack, segmented into four key phases:

Motivation → Attack → Mobilisation → Resolution.

One of the most sobering insights? Threat actors can dwell undetected in systems for up to 328 days. And while many organisations would pay a ransom to regain access, doing so only fuels the cycle of cyber crime.

As Bruce Schneier famously said, “If you think technology is going to solve your security problems, you don’t understand the technology - or the problems.”

Impact
The event reinforced that technology alone isn’t enough - clear communication, human readiness, and process resilience are just as critical.
